SHARAN has pioneering and progressive initiatives in drug treatment , using the philosophy and methodology of harm reduction activities, commencing with its drop in center in the Nizammudin basti in early 1992. The comprehensive HIVAIDS and STD treatment and care programme for IDUs and their sexual partners that is coordinated by SHARAN in five cities of India , has paved the way for a meaningful intervention amongst a marginalized population of IDUs. Having reached more people than its target objective has been a considerable achievement, additionally the production of quality research in all the five cities has made ongoing intervention in this area possible. The 12th International Conference on the Reduction of Drug related Harm hosted by SHARAN in Delhi in 2001 was a valuable platform for the gathering of Harm reduction professionals from across the globe , in this context, the speech of Hon. Minister for State in the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment , Ms. Meneka Gandhi, on behalf of government of India , recognizing harm reduction as a viable intervention in India was its crowning glory.
