Beyond Appearances was formed in 1997, by a few ex and current drug users working in Sharan. Initially, the focus was centered on bringing out a quarterly newsletter, which gave drug users information on safe using practices, safe sex, new illnesses associated with unsafe drug use, new treatments and treatment centers. Primarily, it gave drug users a forum in which they could express their views.

In 1999, support group activists started holding bi-weekly meetings at Yamuna Bazaar, During these meetings, users were urged to express themselves freely, and to share their problems with the group. It was through these meetings, that the idea was formed to start a Support Group, which would try and find solutions to the various problems that the members were facing, and generally, to try and improve their lifestyle.

A team of peer outreach workers, counselors, part time doctor and a nurse manages Support Group activities, 5 ex users are actively involved as volunteers to support ongoing activities.

Views of drug user have been given credence, in the fact that the staff supports their initiatives and plans for themselves may it be the nutrition program, hygiene program or the thrift and savings scheme.
